Yes; but 1st a little humor to keep it all unreal because that’s not how I prepared for my Ironman Triathlons. Not to mention the fact that I’m just at the start of getting back in shape, racing only 5ks so far.
Train like this video purports, and an Ironman will indeed be a miserable experience. For me, an Ironman is about 2-3 years off. Enjoy this bit of witty banter
Yes I’m injured, and I was expecting it. Might I say that I’m already over it because of an aggressive self- therapy program. It’s 48 hours later and I’m walking with a normal gait now. Tomorrow, I’ll be ready to test the waters; but I’m not going to. There’s something more sinister hiding behind this injury.
If you’ve been following my Journey lately, you know I’m complaining about running too fast. I could deliberately slow to a crawl (bore ); that would redress the problem, but it wouldn’t solve the cause. Besides, artificially running too slow for extended periods destroys efficiency. Slow with good form is good for warm up and warm down. So what caused the issue and what’s the answer?
After consulting my Ironman chiropractor friend and coach Jon, what I suspected has indeed happened. I’m getting in CardioVascular shape way faster than my musculature can support the added strain of the running intensity I can sustain. I know for a fact I could run in the 7pc range right now, but I’d tear my legs apart. This last run was a preview of what might be if I didn’t listen to my body (Sorta like the crystal ball in Lord of the Rings that reveals the shire in flames if the fellowship fails).
So, it’s time to start strengthening the musculature. Weights would be a good avenue to do this and I’ve gotten excellent results in the past, but I need specific leg strength right now to address the Cardio/Muscular system imbalance. As well, biking is triathlon specific and the CSUN rec center is 45 minutes away, door to weight room. This is 1.5 hours round trip I can spend training on the bike.
Fortunately, I bought a mountain bike last black friday. Way back when I was training 30 hours a week, my road cycling was never so strong as when I cross-trained with a MTB. The MTB also creates a lot of upper body strength, agility and balance, and proprioception negotiating single track and uneven terrain. These are all desirable traits that 20 and 30 year old athletes have; so once again I’m being pushed in the right direction.
Yep, I love triathlons because when I’m injured, I just move over to another sport while I heal . Triathlons also reduce the incidence of repetitive overuse injuries of practicing just one sport. Anyways, I’m not knocking individual sports, I was an issue of swimming and running before triathlons came about.
So there you have it, might-be-tragedy turned to opportunity. Get ready for a lot of MTB videos with my GoPro camera.
Hope my epiphany has perhaps sparked an analysis of your training or injuries. What did you think of the video? Leave a comment or a ? and I’ll be sure to answer.
